Ultimate XML Sitemap Guidelines for Your Blg

Sitemap - A simple Definition:

Sitemap is an XML file that list URLs for a website along with additional metadata about each URL which opens the gateway for Google and other search engines to find, craw, and index each web page of your website.

Web crawlers usually discover pages from links within the site and from other sites. Sitemap supplement this data to allow crawlers that support sitemap to pickup all URLs in the sitemap and learn about those URLs using associated metadata. That is why sitemap on your website is so important.

Types of Sitemap Formats:
The sitemap protocol enables you to provide details about your pages to search engines, and we encourage it's use since you can provide additional information about site pages beyound just the URLs. You must read Google recommended sitemap.org protocol which states three acceptable types of formats:

 XML Sitemaps

  • Most commonly used sitemap protocol format consist of XML tags.
  • Contains URLs, and metadata about contents.
  • All URLs in a sitemap must be from a single host, such as www.example.com.
  • Sitemap file must not be longer than 50,000 URLs otherwise create multiple sitemaps.
  • must be no longer than 10 MB otherwise create multiple sitemap.
  • Sitemap index file must be UTF-encoded.
RSS (Real Time Syndication) 2.0 | Atom 0.3 | 1.0 Feed
Generally you can use this format only if your site already has a syndication feed. Note that this method may not let search engine know about all the URLs in your site, since the feed may only provide information on recent URLs, although search engine can still use this information to find it about other pages on your site during their normal crawling process by following links inside pages in the feed.

  • Mainly for blogs using syndication feed.
  • Allow subscriber to quickly notify about new post.
  • Must not be more than 50,000 RLs, otherwise create multiple sitemap.

Text File
  •  Text file must have one URL per line.

    1. You can choose to receive notification by email when new comments have been posted on your blog. This way, you can monitor them for spam and delete them when necessary. It is better to enable comment moderation, which will let you view new comments and approve or reject them before they appear on your blog.
      You can also try Akismet.
